So as if we hadn’t seen enough action yesterday, today we returned to the sold out PS Racing Center in Greinbach, Austria for more DMEC action from Round 2 at our season-opening double-header.

Right from the off the action picked up straight where we left off at yesterday in qualifying. Norwegian driver Tor Arne Kvia took an early advantage scoring a whopping 96.00 point score on his first qualifying run. Unfortunately for Tor though, despite putting in such a high-scoring run, it wouldn’t be enough as yesterday’s second placed driver Conor Shanahan would land himself an incredible 98.00 point run right at the end.

However, it didn’t stop Kvia trying his absolute hardest! Not long after leaving the start line during his second run, Kvia’s bonnet would end up on his windscreen and although it meant an automatic zero score, he put on one hell of a show for the crowd, finishing out the complete course despite the issue. Rounding out the Top 3 qualifiers then would be yesterday’s winner Piotr Wiecek, who scored a massive 95.00 point run.

Moving into the Top 32 battles then, the first battle up would be one we’d been looking forward to, which would see Conor Shanahan take on Elias Hountondji in an all Red Bull battle. The Irish youngster would be the one progressing after an exciting affair, but Elias would take some good learning from the battle as he gets to grips with his all-new G82 BMW M4.

On the other side of the bracket a massive upset for Norwegian driver Tor Arne Kvia would see the second-placed qualifier defeated at the hands of local wildcard driver and fan favourite Christopher Bohm. Yesterday’s winner Wiecek would also progress to the Top 16 to set up a mouth-watering battle with Red Bull Drift Brothers’ Johannes Hountondji who would overcome Romanian driver Calin Ciortan.

Moving into the Top 16 battles then, our very first battle would spell heartbreak for on-form Marco Zakouril. Just half way through his chase against Conor Shanahan, Zakouril’s rear-left suspension would completely fail, handing the win to the Irish youngster and leaving the Czech driver heading for an early bath.

Polish driver Adam Zalewski would then set up a dream Top 8 battle with Conor Shanahan as he overcame another Austrian wildcard in Clemens Kauderer, before Jack Shanahan would defeat Portuguese driver Diogo Correia and Benediktas Cirba would overcome Frenchman Axel Francois to set up an Irish vs. Lithuanian battle in the Top 8.

Moving to the other side of the Top 16 bracket, hometown hero Christopher Bohm would have the crowd on their feet as he defeated on-form Italian driver Manuel Vacca. German driver Max Heidrich would then set up an Austria vs. Germany battle in the Top 8, overcoming Mikolaj Zakrzewski. Piotr Wiecek would then show us why he topped the podium yesterday as he overcame Johannes Hountondji, with Oliver Randalu overcoming Swedish driver Linus Joensuu to round out our Top 16 battles.

Fireworks. That is exactly what we got right from the off in the Top 8! First up Adam Zalewski would pull off the chase run of the day so far to overcome the strength of Conor Shanahan. It would then be heartbreak in the Shanahan camp as older brother Jack would suffer gearbox failure in his battle against Benediktas Cirba handing the Lithuanian driver the win.

On the other side of the bracket then, the dream weekend continued for hometown hero Bohm, who would progress over German driver Max Heidrich after he de-beaded a rear tire. Wiecek would then round-out the Top 4 bracket after another incredible performance against Oliver Randalu.

Having just defeated Jack Shanahan, Adam Zalewski would be on the receiving end of disappointment as Benediktas Cirba would prove too strong for Zalewski, cementing his place in the final and pushing Zalewski into a play-off battle against hero of the day Christopher Bohm, who would be yet another driver on Piotr Wiecek’s take-down list here in Austria.

Unfortunately for Bohm though, his dream weekend would end without a place on the podium. Knowing he needed to give it 110%, he pushed just a little too hard, de-beaded a tyre and handed the victory and the final podium place to Adam Zalewski.

And then there were 2! After 3 days and the first 2 rounds of DMEC 2021, it all came down to Piotr Wiecek and Benediktas Cirba. With Cirba proving his worth across the whole weekend, it looked like Wiecek could finally be taken down. In the end, however, Cirba’s clutch would give up the ghost, seeing Cirba shut the car down half-way through his run, gifting the victory to Piotr Wiecek and rounding out the dream weekend for Piotr in the driver’s standings and Poland in Nation’s standings.

WOW! What a weekend. With COVID-19 condensing our 2021 calendar to just 3 weekends, our season-opening double-header was always going to be somewhat of a struggle for our drivers and their cars, but all of our drivers put on one hell of a show for the fans both here in Austria and at home watching live on Red Bull TV. We hope you all enjoyed every second of Round 1 & 2 and we can’t wait to see you all again in Riga, Latvia for Rounds 3 & 4 in just a few weeks’ time on July 31st & August 1st. See you all then!
